A police officer died while eight others were seriously injured during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Homa Bay Town on Sunday evening.

The police officer, who is attached to Muhoroni police station, died after he was hit with a stone on the head by a rowdy youth between Olare and Nyangweso trading centers in Rangwe Sub-county along Homa Bay -Kendu Bay Road.

The officer was rushed to a hospital in Kisumu County, where he died while receiving medication.

It was reported that the officer was attached to Muhoroni Police Division and was driving his boss and colleagues on their way back to their workstation.

Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem said the police officer was hit with a stone on the head when he was driving his boss and other officers on their way back to Muhoroni sub-county.

Koilem says the deceased is one of the officers who had joined their colleagues in Homa Bay County for security reinforcement during the Linda Mwananchi rally.

Koilem says that eight other officers sustained injuries on various parts of the body during the chaotic rally.

He states that seven were treated and discharged with minor injuries, while one officer who sustained a serious head injury was later transferred to a hospital in Kisii Town for treatment.

Koilem further states that 22 suspects were arrested in various parts of the county with crude weapons and concealed number plates.
