In a public notice on Tuesday, KFS said the proposed airstrip at the Meru forest station is intended to improve aviation access for forest management operations, emergency response, and support regional economic development.
According to the agency, preliminary site surveys and wind assessments have identified the proposed location as suitable for the project.
The planned airstrip, together with ancillary infrastructure, is expected to occupy approximately 11 hectares within the forest.
KFS has noted that because the project site is characterized by sparse vegetation cover, it is anticipated to result in minimal ecological disruption.
Additionally, the agency has said the proposed development will include a runway, an apron, and other supporting infrastructure.
KFS has called upon members of the public and stakeholders to share their views, comments, concerns, and recommendations before the project proceeds as required by the Constitution of Kenya and the laws governing public participation.
Interested parties have been asked to submit their written comments to the County Forest Conservator's Office in Meru Town or through the official KFS email before July 21.
KFS has confirmed that all submissions will be treated with strict confidentiality and encouraged interested individuals and organizations to participate in the consultation process before the deadline.
