The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has energized the 86.4-kilometre, 132kV Nanyuki–Rumuruti Transmission Line.
The line was energized on Friday, with the 132kV and 33kV voltages confirmed stable.
KETRACO said the new line marks successful completion of the transmission connection between Nanyuki and Rumuruti.
In addition, the project addresses a long-standing supply constraint in Rumuruti, which has traditionally been served through a long 33kV distribution line from Lanet.
"The new transmission link will shorten the distribution network serving Rumuruti by approximately 50 percent, helping reduce technical losses and improve the quality, efficiency and reliability of electricity supply," the power transmitter said in a statement on Saturday.
The project comprises an 86.4-kilometre, 132kV single-circuit transmission line constructed on double-circuit towers, including approximately 16.8 kilometres of underground cable.
The underground section was adopted following operational and security concerns raised by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) in the vicinity of Laikipia Airbase and was designed and approved in accordance with Kenya Civil Aviation Authority (KCAA) requirements.
The new infrastructure also provides additional transmission capacity to support economic activity in the region, including agro-processing, irrigation, flower farming, manufacturing, hospitality and other enterprises, while improving network resilience and flexibility in serving Laikipia, Nyahururu and neighboring areas.
The project comes after KETRACO energized the 132kV Nanyuki–Isiolo Transmission Line, further reinforcing the transmission network serving Nanyuki, Isiolo, Meru, Laikipia and the wider Upper Eastern region.
Speaking during the energization, KETRACO Managing Director Tom Imbo said the company was commited to providing infrastructure that supports investment and economic activity.
“We are calling on small and medium-sized enterprises, industries and investors to come and invest in this region with greater confidence, because we are strengthening the power supply they need to grow,” said Imbo.
The project was jointly financed by the Government of Kenya, the African Development Bank and Exim Bank of India.
