Short-form video sharing platform TikTok has announced its inaugural Visionary Voices List for Africa, featuring 15 individuals at the forefront of industry-shifting innovation, viral trends elevating African music, transforming entertainment spaces, and cultural representation.

The Visionary Voices Africa List highlights the significant impact that the honourees have on media, entertainment, and cultural representation across the continent.

They are celebrated in three categories - Creators, Small-Owned Businesses, and Industry Disruptors – each containing five individuals each.

The Creators category acknowledged those who have captivated audiences with their engaging and dynamic content, from comedians and sports enthusiasts to dancers.

The Kenyans on this category were Elsa Majimbo and Arap Uria.

Elsa is a comedian from Kenya now residing in the US, who shot to international fame in 2020 with her viral skits. She stands out with her satirical monologues, where she features potato chips, a laid-back mood, and tiny 1990s sunglasses.

Arap Uria, with 1.5 million followers and 5.6 million views, is a sports content creator who combines a love for sports with creativity to entertain and educate.

Other Africans on the Creators category were; Banele Ndaba or Moghelingz (South Africa), Chad Jones (South Africa), and Iremide (Nigeria).

In the Small-Owned Businesses category, TikTok honoured entrepreneurs who use the platform to showcase their unique products and services, thereby revolutionising their industries.

The Kenyans herein included Mwangi Muthoni, who is behind Dreadlocks Nairobi. Mwangi has transformed his salon into Kenya's hot spot for natural dreadlocks.

Also listed here was fashion designer Bolo Bespoke, who uses TikTok to showcase his unique designs, having styled many Kenyan celebrities such as Ohangla maestro Prince Indah.

The other individuals in the Small-Owned Businesses category were; Kayla Kim Kay (South Africa), Blaqboi Victor (Nigeria), and  Alexa Schempers, the founder and creative director of South African-based fashion label Rethread.

The Industry Disruptors category recognised individuals who are challenging conventional industries with innovative perspectives, thereby reshaping their fields and driving positive change.

There was no Kenyan on this list, with the honourees being; Burna Boy (Nigeria), Hilda Baci (Nigeria), Popi Sibiya (South Africa), Joy or @thejoyofficialmus (South Africa), and Uncle Waffles, a Swazi-born DJ and record producer based in South Africa.

Boniswa Sidaba, Head of Content Operations, Sub-Saharan Africa at TikTok commented; "The Visionary Voices List Africa celebrates the extraordinary talent and innovative spirit of the African community. These 15 individuals have made a profound impact on and off the platform. Their dedication to cultural representation and innovation is truly inspiring.”
