Taxpayers can now file their returns through WhatsApp, after the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) launched a new filing solution to simplify compliance and expand the tax base.

The service allows users to initiate a conversation on WhatsApp, select the type of return they want to file, and verify their identity using their KRA PIN.

Once verified, the system reviews a taxpayer’s filing history, highlights any outstanding obligations, and allows them to complete filing or make payments.

KRA says this solution leverages the widely used messaging service to provide real-time assistance, offering instant support to taxpayers who encounter challenges during filing.

“Taxpayers should take advantage of this innovation and file early this year. This new platform represents the standard of tax compliance at KRA," said KRA Commissioner General Humphrey Wattanga.

"By using WhatsApp to file the tax processes become smoother, faster and more accessible to everyone. Filing early not only demonstrates compliance, but also encourages others to adopt simple and efficient ways of meeting their obligations.”

The rollout is part of a phased approach to ease congestion on existing systems and encourage timely compliance.

This comes as KRA reports that digitisation has helped increase the number of people who file their returns and the revenue collected.
