Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata has said he will not stop “speaking truth to power”, insisting he will not be intimidated even as he accused state agencies of being used to harass political leaders who fall out with the government.

Speaking during the Murang’a Youth Service graduation at Ihura Stadium, Kang’ata said anti-graft and security agencies are sometimes deployed against leaders under the guise of fighting corruption.

He cited past incidents in which governors’ homes were raided early in the morning and alleged excessive force used by police, claiming such actions are familiar when leaders differ with those in power.

Kang’ata singled out agencies such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), alleging they have previously been used to “fight” leaders politically.

The remarks come a week after Kang’ata said he would not seek re-election on a UDA ticket in 2027, arguing the party has become unpopular with the masses in the Mt Kenya region.

He said the decision does not mean he has fallen out with President William Ruto, describing the Head of State as a close friend, but added that he has political differences with him.

Kang’ata said his concerns include how the UDA party leader has handled politics in the Mt Kenya region.
