JSS teachers threaten to down tools if TSC fails to offer better terms

Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers who were employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) under contract basis have threatened to down their tools in January 2024. 

The teachers from Homa Bay County held a protest on Wednesday, saying that should the government fail to confirm their employment into permanent and pensionable terms, they will cease to work. 

The government through TSC hired the teachers on contract basis last year. They have been teaching in JSS institutions which are currently domiciled in primary schools across the country. The commission had promised to transit them into permanent and pensionable basis. 

Addressing the press in Homa-Bay town, the teachers told the government to confirm their employment terms and transfer them to senior secondary schools.

They claim that they have worked for a year in JSS without proper employment terms despite the huge workload they experience in such institutions.

The teachers, under the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) had earlier complained of being overworked and given tasks in the primary schools they are domiciled in. 

"In some schools, the JSS teachers are compelled to teach primary school classes and subjects that they have not been trained to teach," Siaya County Executive Secretary Sam Opondo said.
