Jambojet returns to Uganda as low-cost carrier expands regional network

The move represents more than a route expansion for Jambojet. It signals renewed confidence in East African air travel as the region's two largest economies lean into greater connectivity around tourism, trade and business mobility. Uganda's aviation market, which saw approximately 300,000 passengers travel to and from Kenya in 2026, represents a critical piece of Jambojet's broader push to make flying accessible across the region.

"Our return to Uganda is a strategic step forward in our mission to strengthen regional connectivity," said Jambojet Chief Executive Officer Karanja Ndegwa. "We see significant opportunities to support business, tourism and trade between Kenya and Uganda while providing travellers with the affordable, reliable flying experience Jambojet is known for."

Beyond passenger services, Jambojet will introduce cargo and parcel operations on the route, expanding its capacity to move goods between the two countries and tapping into growing regional trade flows. The corridor will also serve Kenyan tourists seeking easier access to Uganda's wildlife and natural attractions, while Ugandan visitors gain convenient onward connections to Kenya's coastal destinations including Mombasa, Diani and Malindi.

The timing aligns with Jambojet's strongest operational year to date. In April 2026, the airline expanded its active fleet to 11 aircraft and celebrated carrying its 10 millionth passenger. Last month, it recorded an on-time performance rate of 86.45 percent, placing it among Africa's most punctual carriers. These metrics underscore the airline's operational maturity since it first launched the Uganda route in 2018.

Jambojet's initial Ugandan operations were derailed by the COVID-19 pandemic, forcing the airline to consolidate around its domestic Kenya network.

The return to Entebbe represents a recalibration of that strategy and a demonstration that regional demand has recovered sufficiently to support expanded service.

The Uganda Association of Travel Agents and Uganda Tourism Board have already begun coordinating with Jambojet ahead of the launch. "The resumption of this service comes at an opportune time, as we continue to strengthen travel, trade and tourism opportunities across the region," said Pearl Hoareau Kakooza, Vice Chairperson of TUGATA and Chairperson of Uganda Tourism Board.

Jambojet operates 11 De Havilland Canada Dash 8-400 aircraft from its hub at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, with flights to Mombasa, Eldoret, Kisumu, Malindi and Lamu. It holds the distinction of being the only Kenyan low-cost carrier with IATA Operational Safety Audit certification and has won Africa's Leading Low-Cost Airline award four consecutive times (2022-2025).
