The name of Felix Orinda, alias DJ Evolve, has long hung on Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino, who is seeking the Nairobi governorship in 2027.

The DJ sustained a gunshot injury in January 2020, when Babu Owino was captured on camera firing a gun at Orinda in Nairobi’s B-Club.

“This has been a serious issue… something happened. It was quite unfortunate,” says Babu Owino on the shooting that left DJ Evolve bedridden for years.

The Embakasi legislator on Monday responded to criticism over the shooting incident, especially a court acquittal in August 2023. Babu had been charged with misuse of a firearm and was set free over poor investigation by the prosecution and gaps in the ballistic evidence.

“I took responsibility as a leader. People are saying, ‘in a working state, Babu should be in jail'. I agree, I should be in jail, I agree. But there are different types of justice. There is the retributive justice that says ‘punish’… then there is restorative justice,” said Babu.

The MP further revealed that he has incurred huge medical costs for the injured DJ.

“I have been taking care of medical bills, up to now…. I have taken loans from banks...from my sacco. I have spent close to Ksh. 70 million on DJ Evolve. The amount of money we spend on DJ Evolve per month is close to Ksh.500,000,” he said.

The Embakasi East MP added that Orinda’s health has since improved and is awaiting physiotherapy to get back on his feet.

Babu added that the shooting incident was a Damascus moment for him, as he has stayed sober since.

“It changed my life for the better. I used to drink, I used to take hard drugs… anything that could make anyone high. I stopped everything,” he said.

“It was meant to change both of us. Felix also stopped consuming alcohol.”

The legislator further claimed that he did not mean to shoot the DJ, as they had no conflict.

“Felix did not annoy me. He did not do anything wrong to me. Felix just asked me about the item [gun], that ‘is it fake or genuine?' I just removed it to show. There was nothing wrong that happened between Felix and me. That is why he forgave me,” he said.

In 2024, the DJ took Citizen Digital through his recovery journey, and plans to get back on the deck.
