‘I did not receive any money’: Junet Mohamed backtracks on claim that MPs were paid to impeach Gachagua

Speaking during an interview on Citizen TV’s The Explainer, Junet said his earlier remarks referred to claims that MPs were being lobbied to support Gachagua’s impeachment and not to him personally receiving money.

“I did not receive any money. I did not need any money to impeach Gachagua. You have to look at some things in political context. Parliament across the world has lobbying systems, people lobby each other. I was talking about it in the context of people lobbying so that he can be impeached,” Junet stated. 

Gachagua was impeached by the National Assembly in October 2024 before the Senate upheld the impeachment, removing him from office.

Junet said ODM lawmakers had already discussed the impeachment at length before signing the motion, citing their experience with Gachagua during his time as Deputy President.

“For us to impeach Gachagua as ODM was like a duty for the sufferings we went through in his hands when he was the DP for two years. The way he abused us, molested us in the streets, using that former IG called Koome. He did many bad things to us, we were just waiting for God Almighty to bring him into our hands, and God brought him,” he alleged. 

According to Junet, Gachagua’s impeachment was supported across the political divide and was driven by dissatisfaction with his conduct while serving as Deputy President.

“Gachagua was impeached in a bipartisan manner. People were tired of him,” he said.

“What we remembered were things like having 5.00 am meetings in his office with policemen to deal with us in the streets. Those are the kind of things that motivated us to impeach him."

The lawmaker remained cagey about the details, instead deflecting the issue and insisting that he had only relayed information he had received.

“Kitu could be some form of tokens, you could be induced in many ways. I was told of some characters making noise out here. I was relaying information of what I was told,” he said.

Junet's latest remarks come weeks after he claimed during a political convention in Kakamega that MPs were “given something” to impeach Gachagua.

At the time, he alleged that money had been distributed to lawmakers during the impeachment process and claimed Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot was the “accounting officer” for the funds.

“Wakati tulikuwa tunafukuza Gachagua kazi, kuna kitu ilitembea hapo. Huko Bunge. Accounting officer alikuwa Aaron Cheruiyot,” Junet said at the time.

He also claimed some lawmakers had failed to use the money wisely, including an unnamed MP whom he accused of spending it on women instead of investing in a home.
