The Ministry of Health has announced that a
truck believed to have been transporting sodium cyanide overturned at Kambembe
area in Rironi, Kiambu County.
Public Health and Professional Standards Principal
Secretary Mary Muthoni, in a statement to newsrooms, said the incident caused a
spillage of the highly toxic substance in the area.
“The Ministry advises the public to avoid the
site of the incident and to cooperate with our emergency and disaster response
teams as they work to contain the situation,” noted the PS.
“The Ministry of Health remains committed to
ensuring public safety and managing the risks associated with hazardous
substances. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes
available.”
The PS went ahead to note some of the dangers of sodium cyanide, noting that it is extremely toxic, and that ingesting or inhaling even small amounts is potentially fatal.
“Sodium cyanide poses a significant threat to
aquatic life. Accidental release into waterways can cause extensive fish kills
and long-term damage to aquatic ecosystems,” added PS Muthoni.
“Protective Measures Proper Personal
Protective Equipment (PPE) such as gloves, masks, and eye protection is essential
when handling sodium cyanide to prevent direct exposure. Adequate ventilation
and spill containment systems are crucial in environments where sodium cyanide
is handled/present.”
