In a move aimed at fostering civic awareness and encouraging youth engagement in governance, Garissa County Assembly Speaker Abdi Gure has officially opened the doors of the assembly to local schools, offering students an opportunity to learn firsthand about the structures and operations of county Assembly and the county government in general.
On Wednesday, Speaker Gure welcomed students
and teachers from Baitul Hikma Integrated School as the beneficiaries of this
initiative.
The visit, which took place at the County
Assembly chambers in Garissa town, included a guided tour, interactive sessions
with assembly staff, and a briefing on the roles and responsibilities of
elected leaders and the legislative process.
Speaking during the visit, Speaker Gure
emphasized the importance of involving the younger generation in matters of
governance.
“Our children are the future leaders. It is
vital that they understand how government works and the role of the county
assembly in serving the people. Through these visits, we aim to demystify
governance and plant the seeds of leadership early,” he said.
Teachers from Baitul Hikma praised the
initiative, describing it as timely and impactful.
“This experience has given our learners
practical knowledge beyond the classroom. Seeing the assembly in action and
interacting with leaders has made governance more real and relatable to them,”
said one of the teachers accompanying the students.
The Speaker also encouraged other schools
in Garissa County to take advantage of the program and schedule educational
visits to the assembly. The county assembly, he noted, is committed to
transparency, youth empowerment, and promoting civic responsibility among the
community.
The program is expected to continue
throughout the year, targeting both primary and secondary schools across the
county.
