Gambia coach McKinstry wary of stubborn Kenya

The Gambia national football team has arrived in Kenya as they gear up for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against the Harambee Stars, which will be played this Friday at the Moi International Sports Center, Kasarani, Nairobi.

Speaking to the media at Kasarani Stadium Annex II, Gambia’s head coach and former Gor Mahia coach, Jonathan McKinstry, expressed confidence in his squad but acknowledged the challenge ahead.

McKinstry termed the match as very important for them, knowing it won’t be easy because they are playing away, at Kenya’s home ground.

Also, he cited Harambee Stars’ strong home support that came alive during the just-concluded Africa Nations Championships (CHAN) as a cause of serious concern as they prepare to face Kenya.

“Their display and strong home support were key to them storming the last eight, so we shouldn’t underestimate them.”

He also noted that many of the current Harambee Stars players are familiar to him from his time coaching Gor Mahia FC; he trained several of their players in Kenya, so he knows their abilities.

Adding to the optimism in the Gambia camp, skipper Yankuba Minteh, who plies his trade with Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion, praised Kenya’s squad, terming it a good challenge.
