Gachagua under fire over alleged misappropriation of funds

Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua could find himself in trouble over the alleged misappropriation of funds after the county’s public accounts committee found out that development projects have been hampered by misappropriation of funds.

The committee’s chairman Baragu Mutahi has noted that during the last financial year an audit has revealed that the county government misappropriated a total of 1.2 billion shillings in various departments.
The Nyeri county assembly’s public accounts committee has raised a red flag in relation to how funds allocated to the county in the 2013/2014 financial year have been put to use.
Mutahi has revealed that the committee in its probe found out that there has been outright corruption and misappropriation of funds totaling 1.2 billion shillings through the county’s various departments which ought have been channeled to service delivery.
Mutahi explained an instance in which the committee discovered that 81 million shillings were spent on leasing a commercial building in Nyeri town and renovation of the former Town hall for county offices, with the committee raising concerns about the deal.
The committee intends to come up with a report that would see Nyeri governor Nderitu Gachagua’s government come into sharp focus.
The committee also intends to hand over the outcome of its own probe to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for further investigations.
