Former Kilgoris Member of Parliament and former Cabinet Minister Gideon Sitelu Konchellah has died while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital, bringing to a close a political career that shaped Kilgoris politics for nearly two decades.

Konchellah, who had reportedly been battling illness since late 2025, died in the early hours of Saturday after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to family sources and government officials.

Current Kilgoris MP Julius Sunkuli mourned the former legislator as a leader who played a significant role in the constituency’s political history.

“I have sadly learnt of the death of Honourable Gideon Konchellah, former MP for Kilgoris constituency. The late Konchellah was both my successor as well as my predecessor,” Sunkuli stated.

He added that the late politician dedicated two decades of service to the people of Kilgoris and described his death as a major loss to the region.

President William Ruto also confirmed the death, saying Konchellah's life was shaped by the lives he had touched and the faith his people placed in him.

"For nearly two decades, Hon. Konchellah gave himself to the people of Kilgoris; and through them, to our nation. He represented with dignity. He understood that public office is, above all, a public trust. His was a life measured not in the years he held office, but in the lives he touched and the faith his people placed in him," Ruto stated.

"Today, Kenya is the poorer for his loss. Kilgoris mourns a devoted son and a steadfast champion. The nation mourns a leader of his generation."

Konchellah represented Kilgoris Constituency for multiple terms between 2003 and 2022 and remained one of the most influential political figures in Narok County during that period.

Throughout his political journey, he was associated with several parties, among them the Party of National Unity (PNU), the United Republican Party (URP), and later the Jubilee Party.

Beyond Parliament, Konchellah served in former President Mwai Kibaki’s administration as Minister for Immigration and Registration of Persons between 2006 and 2007.

During his time in the ministry, he spearheaded reforms in refugee management, including the implementation of the Refugee Act of 2006, legislation that replaced outdated colonial-era laws and introduced a more structured framework for handling refugee affairs in Kenya.

After leaving Parliament, Konchellah unsuccessfully contested the Narok Senate seat in the 2022 General Election.

His body was moved to Lee Funeral Home as leaders, family members and residents across Narok County continued to mourn him as a seasoned politician and longtime public servant.
