Ewaso Nyiro squatters seek gov't intervention in land dispute

The squatters claimed they have been on the riparian land within Marua-Narok village for over 40 years now since they were allocated by the government then.

However, according to members of the pastoral communities, some wealthy individuals have hatched a plan to have squatters evicted from the land.

Mzee Joseph Lekoluwa, a member of the local Community Water Resource Users Association (WRUA) noted that some individuals have erected illegal beacons in order to have the squatters evicted.

He noted that over 10,000 households both pastoralists and crop farmers depend on the waters from River Ewaso Narok and hence it would not be right to have them suffer.

His sentiments were echoed by Timothy Lenyakopiro who observed that the Riparian land becomes more useful to pastoralists especially when drought strike.

He questioned where hundreds of squatters living along the river banks will go should they be evicted.
