KWS rescues Zebra found with slipper stuck on its leg

Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) veterinarians have rescued a zebra at Mt Elgon National Park after it was found with a slipper stuck around its leg, an entanglement that had cut into its skin and affected its movement.

The KWS veterinary team responded, safely removed the slipper and treated the injured leg, helping the zebra regain mobility.

KWS said such cases may appear ordinary but are more common than most people realise, warning that litter such as flip-flops, plastic, rope and wire poses a serious threat to wildlife when left in the environment.

Animals may walk through such materials or become entangled in them, the agency said, potentially resulting in life-threatening injuries.

KWS has urged Kenyans to pick up litter whenever they encounter it and dispose of it properly, to help protect wildlife and the environment.
