The axe has finally fallen on Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna who for months now has been entangled in a protracted legal battle with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party that had through a National Executive Committee (NEC) resolution removed him as the party's Secretary General.

The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) on Thursday put an end the long debate removing Sifuna from the leadership list of the ODM party.

Through a letter addressed to Sifuna at his office in Parliament Buildings, the Registrar wrote that; “Upon review of the documents submitted by the party and the lack of response from you pursuant to Article 47 of the Constitution, we note that your removal from the office of the party Secretary General was in line with the Political Parties Act Cap. 7D and the ODM party Constitution.”

The letter concluded that “owing to the above, this office has effected the change and updated the party records.”

Sifuna quickly wrote a response through his lawyer Isaac Okero saying he reads mischief in the letter and the instant and hasty conclusion of the processes.

Lawyer Okero further told the ORPP that they note that the effecting of a change in the party records omits the necessary processes of Section 20(2) of the Political Parties Act, rendering the action ultra vires for which they shall seek appropriate relief.

Addressing the press at the ODM headquarters in Nairobi, Deputy Secretary General and Busia Woman Representative Catherine Omanyo said the party has waited for so long to get a greenlight to drop errant members from the party leadership structures.

“We have waited for so long…we cannot have a person masquerading to be an SG yet he is out there running his own agenda...we can now move on as party and he can as well go and form his own party,” said Omanyo.
