The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has banned 21
unapproved mobile phone brands from the market, warning that they pose a safety
and health risk to the users.
CA Director General David Mugonyi, in a notice issued on
Tuesday, cautioned against an influx of the said mobile phone brands, which he
referred as non-type approved.
Among them are: Tinsik, Realfone, F+, Fonrox, Mez, Nemojo,
Vue, Bundy, Qqmee, U-FM, Chatada, Superx, and Momofly.
The other flagged phone brands are: WR, X Oda, Smba, Q-Seven,
Ugbad, FT, Raeno, and Switch.
The authority hence cautioned members of the public against purchasing
the listed brands, further barring vendors against selling them.
Mugonyi further urged Kenyans to only buy mobile phones from
licensed vendors available, also noting that they should verify the approval
status of the said gadgets on the CA website.
“Check the authenticity of the mobile phones before purchase,
by dialing *#06# and sending the 15-digit IMEI number as an SMS to 1555, or on
the CA website free of charge,” stated Mugonyi.
“The Authority, through a Type Approval process, ensures that
all ICT devices comply with national and international standards related to
safety, health and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), thereby protecting
consumers from hazardous products, minimizing health risks and preventing
harmful interference with other electronic equipment.”
