Junior Starlets
tactician Mildred Cheche has hailed her charges following a huge 6-0 win
against Somalia in the second fixture of the CECAFA U17 women’s championship in
Tanzania.
Coming off a
staggering 16-0 win against Sudan in their opening match, Starlets under the
stewardship of Coach Cheche, maintained their blistering form humbling Somalia
6-0 on Monday at the Azam Sports Complex in Chamazi, Dar Es Salaam to book
their place in semi-finals.
Beryl Okumu was
the player of the match scoring a double as Faith Boke, Brenda Achieng,
Elizabeth Alizeba and Patience Waithira scored one each.
Somalia has very
few survival hopes as they lost 4-0 to Tanzania in the opening fixture and must
overcome Sudan in the last Group ‘A’ fixture.
“I want to congratulate
my girls for the good job done. We managed to score many goals in the first
half, something we have been struggling in but I’m happy that the girls pressed
the right button.
The tournament
is a good opportunity for the team ahead of our FIFA U17 World Cup qualifier
against South Africa.”
The result
leaves Kenya at the summit of Group ‘A’ with six points and an impressive goal
difference of +22.
They will now
face hosts Tanzania, who are second in the group, in their final group stage
match on Wednesday.
The tournament
is a key preparation for Kenya ahead of their FIFA U17 World Cup Qualifier
against South Africa to be played between July 3-5, with a return leg scheduled
for July 10-12.
The Junior
Starlets are just one step away from securing a return to the global showpiece
after qualifying for the first time in 2024 in Dominican Republic.
