CHAN 2024 ticket conundrum: ‘Sold out’ but empty seats – who is fooling whom?

Football stakeholders are raising questions on the state of Harambee Stars match day tickets, with fans struggling to buy the match entry tickets- now a prized commodity.

In the run-up to Harambee Stars versus DR Congo game, fans lamented their inability to access the tickets with online site chan.mookh.com., where the tickets are on sale, reporting that the match had been sold out.

However, on match day, TV cameras picked out hundreds of empty seats, raising the question, who could have bought the tickets? Why didn’t they turn up for the match, or better still, who could be following whom?

The regular tickets were selling at Sh200, VIP at Ksh500.

Meanwhile, the Local Organising Committee [LOC] chairman Nicholas Musonye admitted that the stadium was not entirely full but stated that it is standard practice for ‘safety reasons’.

Musonye denied speculations of ticket hoarding, stating that the ticket purchasing process is regulated by CAF and not LOC.

Some had claimed that the move was aimed at neutralising potential anti-government chants during the match.

This claim had gained traction after videos surfaced online of politicians affiliated with the regime flaunting tickets.

Many fans resorted to re-purchasing tickets that had already been bought, but at premium prices.

Hundreds of DRC fans are among those who were locked out after failing to obtain tickets.

Musonye claimed that by Saturday evening 46,000 tickets had been sold but the debate as to whether the tickets were truly sold out continues to rage on, ahead of Kenya versus Angola game on Thursday and a mouth-watering Sunday clash against Morocco.
