Azimio affiliate parties call for Junet's resignation, defend Uhuru's record

The parties, led by National Liberal Party (NLP) leader Dr Augustus Kyalo Muli, say Junet’s continued stay in office is untenable, citing what they describe as reckless and defamatory remarks that demean the legacy of former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, the parties defended Kenyatta’s record, saying he served the country with dignity, safeguarded territorial integrity, promoted national cohesion and oversaw a peaceful transfer of power. They said attempts to diminish that record were dishonest and insulting to millions of Kenyans.

Beyond the rhetoric, the parties among them, UDP, UPA, LPK, P.T.P., UPF, raised longstanding concerns over the handling of agents’ funds during the 2022 general elections.

They claim mismanagement of the funds weakened grassroots mobilisation, compromised electoral oversight and contributed to Azimio’s repeated losses in the presidential race.

“Such conduct goes beyond incompetence and reflects a pattern of internal sabotage that eroded trust at crucial moments,” the statement said, directly blaming Junet Mohamed. The parties demanded his immediate retirement from all Azimio leadership positions.

The group has also formally asked former President Kenyatta to convene a consultative meeting of all Azimio-affiliated parties to chart a new leadership path for the coalition. They argue the meeting is necessary following the death of Raila Odinga, the exit of Martha Karua, and what they describe as the anticipated resignation of Junet Mohamed.

Azimio was formed on March 12, 2022 as a broad coalition anchored on unity, reforms and democratic ideals, initially bringing together 26 registered political parties. While several parties have since exited, reducing its parliamentary numbers, the NLP and its allies insist the coalition remains alive and relevant.

They say the proposed meeting should focus on filling vacant positions within the National Executive Council and other governing organs, restoring internal discipline and preparing the coalition for the 2027 general elections.

“This is not a moment of division, but a moment of reckoning,” the statement said, adding that Azimio must cleanse itself of actions and actors working against its destiny if it is to remain a strong, united and credible opposition force.
