The
Confederation of African Football (CAF) Secretary General Veron Mosengo-Omba
has given Kenya a glowing endorsement, saying the country is ready to host the
African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Speaking in Nairobi
after inspecting the two proposed venues—Kasarani and Nyayo
stadia—Mosengo-Omba, who toured the facilities alongside Sports Cabinet
Secretary Salim Mvurya and Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein
Mohamed, urged Kenyans to turn out in large numbers to support the national
team, Harambee Stars.
Mosengo-Omba
said Kenyans should embrace the ‘Pamoja’ (together) spirit and rally behind the
broader regional effort, noting that the tournament should be viewed not as an
event split among Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, but as one shared stage for East
Africa. “Kenyans should embrace the Pamoja spirit I have seen all over the
country. I urge them to come out in numbers to support their team. From what I
have seen, the country is very ready to host this competition,” he said.
He further
observed that Kenya’s performance as a co-host will be closely watched as the
country bids—alongside its regional partners—to stage the 2027 Africa Cup of
Nations (AFCON). “This competition will go a long way in Kenya’s bid to host
AFCON 2027, so let us deliver this tournament to the best of our ability,” he
added.
Sports Cabinet
Secretary Salim Mvurya also reassured both local and international fans that
security plans are well underway. “Security simulations will begin on Wednesday
to ensure the safety of Kenyans and visitors during the competition. I can
assure fans the games will be a safe zone, and they should come out to support
their teams,” Mvurya said.
