The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has moved to reassure the public following concerns over its directive requiring all newly imported mobile devices to adopt USB Type-C charging ports.
CA Chairman Charles Karondo says the rule will only apply to
future imports and will not affect devices already purchased, in transit, or
charging accessories currently in use.
He clarified that the directive is aimed at ensuring future
compliance by manufacturers exporting devices into Kenya.
“Tumeambia manufacturers wakitengeneza vitu za hapa
Kenya, watengeneze vitu za Type C ili Mkenya yeyote akiwa na charger moja
ataweza kucharge nayo simu yake, acharge nayo laptop, acharge nayo iPad, acharge
nayo torch ama kitu kingine angependa kucharge,” said Karondo.
Karondo also noted that only phones with USB Type-C ports will be approved for importation going forward, a move intended to align the country with global standards, enhance uniformity, and reduce consumer confusion.
On March 24, 2026, CA issued a public notice alerting the
public of new technical requirements used during the type approval process for
mobile devices that are intended for sale, importation, assembly or use in the
country.
These requirements stipulated that, effective March 24th,
all mobile phone importers and dealers seeking type approval must use USB
Type-C as the charging interface and that the cable must be detachable from the
power adapter.
According to CA, these requirements are in line with global
standards.
In line with the law, all mobile phone importers must obtain a type approval from the Authority before proceeding with the importation process.
