Residents of the Tumutumu area in Ndithini Sub-County, Machakos County, are raising concerns about the pollution of the Matheng’eta River, whose water has turned green.

Residents in Kasuvilo Sub-Location in Mananja Location say the water is no longer safe for domestic use or for their livestock.

The pollution is suspected to be linked to waste from an organic factory located upstream.

Residents allege that effluent from the factory is transported by exhauster lorries and deposited in nearby quarry pits.

They claim the waste has overflowed from the pits into the river, with the organic deposits also producing a foul odour.

Residents are now calling for urgent investigations and intervention by relevant authorities to establish the source of the pollution and protect the river and communities that depend on it.
