The discovery of gas emissions allegedly coming from the Pate 2 Well on Pate Island is causing some level of concern among the community.
The said exploration exercise was abandoned four years ago -- leaving behind a well jutting out of the ground like a sore thumb.
Reports indicate that environmental organisation Save Lamu may have identified leakages and visible bubbles of gas and a red liquid on the surface.
Residents say that the gas emits an unpleasant odour that intensifies during rainy weather.
Farmers and livestock keepers in the area claim their activities have been affected because of the worsening smell of gas.
The Chairman of Save Lamu Mr. Somo has called on the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to intervene and ensure safety measures are in place.
According to Mohamed Athman, an environmental activist in the area, most residents are concerned over the safety and environmental impact of the abandoned project on the vulnerable communities.
''We are asking the government and regulatory authorities to ensure that companies conducting exploration activities prioritise the safety of the communities and the environment before embarking on such projects,'' said Athman.
