Five people sustained injuries on Friday morning in a road accident on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in Athi River, Machakos County.

Athi River police boss Sharma Wario said the accident involving a mini-bus occurred after the driver tried to avoid a head-on collision with an on-coming vehicle that was carelessly overtaking.

The driver of the mini-bus, which was heading towards Nairobi, veered off the road causing the vehicle to overturn.

“It happened that the said mini-bus was being driven from Mombasa general direction heading towards Nairobi and upon reaching the location of the accident the driver was obstructed by an oncoming unknown motor vehicle which was overtaking.

“The driver tried to avoid a head-on collision by swerving to the left and in the process lost control and the vehicle overturned,” said Wario.

The injured passengers were taken to Shalom Community Hospital in Athi River town and are said to be in stable condition.

The bus was towed to Kyumbi Police Station.
