One dead, 18 injured in Makueni road accident

One person has been confirmed dead and 18 others injured after a matatu they were traveling in was involved in an accident following the detachment of a front wheel.
The accident occurred at Kikiini area along the road from Kikima to Machakos in Makueni County.
Confirming the incident, Mbooni West Police Commander Benson Makumbi said the matatu had been hired in Nairobi to transport passengers attending a wedding ceremony in Kyuu.
The accident happened while they were returning to Nairobi.
Makumbi added that the matatu, which has a capacity of 14 passengers, was carrying more than the permitted number. He said investigations have been launched to establish the exact cause of the accident.
The injured are receiving treatment at Mbooni Hospital, while the body of the deceased has been preserved at the facility’s mortuary.
