Suspected robber in critical condition after botched robbery in Kericho
The incident occurred while the suspects were terrorizing motorists on the Kericho-Nakuru Highway, only to be accosted by the officer.
According to the police report, the suspect was part of a trio that included the driver, who had initially picked up the police officer, James Mudambi, along with other passengers from Kisumu, claiming they were traveling to Nakuru.
There were seven occupants in the vehicle, but two got off in Kericho. After stopping at Brooke trading center to pick up another passenger, the driver parked the vehicle at Kapkatungur.
He then retrieved a machete and a firearm, handing them to an accomplice seated behind him, before demanding that passengers surrender their valuables.
Sensing danger, Mudambi, seated behind the driver and armed with his Cesca pistol, opened fire, hitting the suspected robber in the shoulder.
A shootout ensued, allowing the driver and another accomplice to flee into the nearby Kapkatungur tea estate.
The injured suspect was arrested and taken to Londiani Police Station before being transported to hospital.
