Man dies after attack by elephant while on boda boda

An old man succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, August 7, following an attack by a marauding elephant at the Ol Joro Orok area, Nyandarua county.

According to the family, the victim, Mr. Wilson Gichiru Higa, was attacked on Saturday night, around 10pm.

The family also said that Mr. Gichiru was new in the area, and was heading to a family get-together meeting on a boda boda when they were attached.

“This man travelled all the way from Murang’a county to come and attend a family meeting here in Nyandarua. It is sad that he came all the way only to die here, in this manner,” said one of the family members.

The boda boda rider who was ferrying the old man to the meeting however managed to escape after the jumbo charged at them – and melted into the bush.

The animal is said to have roughed up the victim; kicking, stepping and gorging at him with the thick of its trunk.

"The commotion attracted neighbours who rushed to the scene to try and rescue him,” said the source, adding that the people managed to scare the animal away.

The man was rushed to JM Kariuki Memorial Hospital in Ol Kalou town where he died while undergoing treatment.

The family has asked the government, through the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS), to restrain the animals.
