Kenya
Sevens Shujaa are staring at yet another fight for survival in the HSBC Sevens
relegation playoffs.
Once
a dominant force in the global sevens circuit, the team finds itself in a
precarious position despite a commendable performance at the recently concluded
Hong Kong Sevens.
Shujaa
put up a spirited fight in Hong Kong but fell short, securing only three
points. The result saw them climb to ninth place in the overall standings with
18 points.
However,
even a victorious campaign in the upcoming Singapore Sevens would only take
them to 38 points—insufficient to guarantee core status for next season.
Great
Britain, currently above Kenya in the standings, has already sealed its place
in the HSBC SVNS Series with 38 points.
This
leaves Shujaa with no option but to battle for their lives in the relegation
playoffs. USA, Ireland, and Uruguay, all with 17 points last season, proved
their mettle in the playoffs, making the road to redemption even tougher for
Kevin Wambua’s charges.
The
Singapore Sevens presents a crucial challenge for Kenya, who are drawn in Pool
B alongside Ireland and France. This tournament is their final chance to gain
momentum before the cutthroat playoffs.
Meanwhile,
at the top of the standings, Argentina has been the undisputed powerhouse this
season, winning three consecutive tournaments in Perth, Vancouver, and Hong
Kong.
As
they look to wrap up the league title in Singapore, Shujaa must focus on
survival, proving that their resurgence from last season’s relegation was not
in vain.
