AFC Leopards head coach Patrick Aussems has urged his players to end the season on a high after suffering a shock 2-1 defeat to Nairobi City Stars in a Kenya Premier league match staged Monday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Victor Omune awoke the Leopards fans in the 17th minute as he slotted home the first goal of the evening as they held on into the break.

However, Kelvin Etemesi silenced the Leopards fans with a sublime goal in the 66th minute before burying them with his brace in the 89th minute to hand Nairobi City Stars the defining win which ensured their safety in the premier league.

The former premier league giants will now be looking to avoid more blushes in their remaining fixtures as they hunt for maximum points.

And the Belgian coach has urged his players to keep their heads high especially after seeing their seven year title drought continue after they were bungled out of the FKF Cup by bitter rivals Kakamega Homeboyz.

“Since last week and disappointment from the FKF cup we have lost motivation. We have nothing to play for but we have to maintain our pride. We should get a maximum of nine points from the remaining matches,” said Aussems.

The Belgian shifted the blame on his defenders for sloppiness which resulted in the goals they conceded.

“We have always been committing defensive errors and today [Monday] it was no different. We conceded cheap goals, we should be aggressive both defensively and offensively,” Aussems fumed.

Nairobi City Stars have been Leopards bogey team for ages with the city-based team grabbing six wins and six draws from their last 22 outings.

His Nairobi City Stars counterpart Nicholas Muyoti was however a relieved man after the win saw them escape evade the dreaded relegation axe.

“I want to thank the players and the effort they gave; they never gave up even when trailing at the break. We had to make changes in the second half which bore fruit,” he explained. “It’s amazing how these boys have grown, the work we’ve been doing is now paying off,” noted Muyoti.

Nairobi City Stars are now 15th on 33 points while AFC Leopards lie at position seven on 48 points.

Leopards will be lining up against Vihiga Bullets on Saturday before welcoming Sofapaka and rounding off their season against Kariobangi Sharks.
