Who is Sammy Wainaina? Meet the All Saints Cathedral Provost against politicising religion
All Saints Cathedral Provost Sammy Wainaina, the cleric who went viral last week for criticizing the Kenya Kwanza administration for holding numerous prayer rallies he termed as not genuine, is once again the talk of town after reaffirming his stance on the same in a live TV broadcast on Wednesday night.
Wainaina's name trended
on Twitter for the better part of Thursday after the clergyman appeared on
Citizen TV's JKLive show where he reiterated his stance on
keeping the church and politics separate.
While Reverend Wainaina
is well-known for being opinionated and taking a firm position on issues not
much is known about his private life.
Citizen Digital did some
digging and found out a few interesting things about the clergyman including
his favourite Bible verse.
Ordained at the Nakuru
Diocese in 1996, Wainaina has served in the church for the past 25 years.
During his long career, he has held positions such as vicar, Archdeacon and
Assistant Provost.
He became the All Saints
Cathedral Provost in 2013 and has held the position ever since.
Wainaina tied the knot
with his sweetheart Beatrice Waithira in 1997 and they are blessed with three
children; Joan Wairimu, Victor Wainaina and Kizzy Pat Wanjiku.
His favourite Bible verse
is Isaiah 51:1-2 which says: " Remember the rock from which you were
cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; look to Abraham, your father,
and to Sarah, who gave you birth. When I called him he was only one man, and I
blessed him and made him many.”
He holds a Diploma
in Divinity from St. Paul’s Theological College in Kapsabet) and a
Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity from St. Paul’s University, Limuru,
Dr. Wainaina is also a
holder of an MSc in Education and Training for Development from Reading
University and a doctorate-level religious degree from the Asbury Theological
Seminary in Kentucky.
