Wanjigi: Police destroyed property worth over Ksh.10M during arrest

Appearing at the Milimani Law Courts on Wednesday, Wanjigi, through his lawyer Willis Otieno, submitted that Anti-Terror Police Unit (APTU) officers deployed to arrest him on Tuesday broke into his office causing extensive damage.

“They broke into the office and caused damage to property worth more than Ksh.10 million. We are still doing assessments to come up with the exact figure,” submitted Wanjigi’s lawyer.

Wanjigi’s defence team faulted the arrest saying it was in violation of the law since there is an existing court order restraining his arrest and prosecution.

“The IG and the DPP are restrained to that extent it is an abuse to your time and the court process… I do pray that we all convert ourselves to law-abiding citizens and officers of the Kenyan state and obey the orders of the high court,” added Lawyer Willis Otieno.

The court has adjourned until 1pm to verify the said court orders after which it will be clear whether or not Wanjigi will be charged today.

Wanjigi was dramatically arrested on Tuesday after a day-long standoff at his offices where detectives had to break into one of the buildings at his offices where he had reportedly locked himself up.

The businessman was apprehended following a warrant of arrest issued by a Nairobi magistrate’s court.

Wanjigi alongside his wife and several others are accused of involvement  in a land fraud incident. He has denied the claims.

He is facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and forgery of a title deed.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) recommended the prosecution of  Wanjigi and his wife Irene Nzisa for allegedly obtaining money by false pretence and conspiracy to defraud involving a Ksh.1.2 billion piece of land in Nairobi.

Detectives from the land fraud unit of the DCI forwarded the inquiry file on the 10th of December 2021, to the DPP with recommendations that Wanjigi and Nzisa among others be charged with obtaining Ksh.56 million from Kenroid Limited, by falsely pretending they were in a position to sell the company the piece of land along General Mathenge road in Westlands.
