Two people have been killed and two others seriously injured following an attack by suspected cattle rustlers in the Merti area of Loiyangalani sub-county, Marsabit County.
Confirming the
incident, Loiyangalani Police Commander Nicholas Mutua said a group of about 30
moran youths launched the attack around midnight on Thursday, targeting herders
from two local communities.
The attackers,
armed with illegal AK-47 rifles, opened fire on the herders before making away
with 600 goats and sheep.
Two youths,
aged 19 and 22, were killed on the spot, while two other adult men sustained
serious gunshot wounds.
Commander Mutua
added that thanks to the swift response of regular police officers and their
National Police Reserve (NPR) counterparts, all 600 stolen animals were
successfully recovered.
However, the
suspects managed to escape into the nearby bush, where they are believed to be
hiding.
A security operation is currently
underway to track down and apprehend the attackers.
