Safaricom CEO Peter Ndegwa takes up new role as Meru University Chancellor
Safaricom Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Peter Ndegwa has officially assumed the role of Chancellor at the Meru University of Science and Technology (MUST).
Taking
to social media platform X after the official inauguration ceremony, Ndegwa
expressed enthusiasm for his new role, emphasising his commitment to furthering
the university's mission.
"It’s
truly a privilege to take on this role, and I am humbled by the responsibility
entrusted to me by the university. As I embark on this new journey, I am filled
with a sense of purpose and dedication to advancing the mission of Meru
University of Science and Technology," he said.
"Together, let us continue to strive for excellence, embrace innovation, and empower the next generation of leaders and change-makers."
The telco boss, who is replacing Equity CEO Dr. James Macharia to become the university's second chancellor, assumed the position following a presidential appointment in November 2023.
Macharia's tenure lapsed on July 20, 2023.
Announcing his appointment via a gazette notice, President William Ruto said Ndegwa will assume the position effective November 1, 2023, for a period of five years.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 38 (1) (a) of the Universities Act, 2012, I, William Samoei Ruto, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, appoint– Peter Ndegwa Waititu to be the Chancellor of the Meru University of Science and Technology, for a period of five (5) years, with effect from the 1st November 2023,” read the notice.
