Safari Rally: Uncertainty as High Court nullifies Kenya's 2025 WRC hosting deal

The High Court has nullified an agreement between the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the Kenya Motor Sports Federation (KMSF), throwing the organization of the 2025 World Rally Championship (WRC)  into uncertainty.

Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate Anne Nyoike ruled that the agreement, signed on January 25, 2025, by suspended KMSF Chairman Maina Muturi, had no legal standing as it was executed in defiance of a court order barring him from managing the federation’s affairs.

“The agreement executed by the respondent is null and void for lack of legal basis. ,” reads the ruling.

The court has given Muturi seven days to show cause why he should not be committed to civil jail for disobeying court orders. He has also been ordered to appear in court on March 25 to respond to the contempt charges.

The case was filed by KMSF Director James Kahumbura, who argued that Muturi acted without authorization. The court upheld this claim, noting that Muturi failed to dispute the restraining order or provide justification for his actions.

With the WRC event scheduled for March 20–23, the ruling has raised concerns about its organization, leaving stakeholders awaiting further direction on the way forward.
