Ripple Effect Kenya rescues 50 donkeys from illegal slaughter

Donkeys offloaded for distribution to farmers in Ndhiwa.

Ripple Effect Kenya, in partnership with Brooke East Africa through the Thriving with Donkeys project in Homa Bay, has rescued 50 donkeys that were once victims of illegal slaughter.

The donkeys will now embark on a new journey as they will be rehomed to farmers in Ndhia and Rangwe, Homa Bay County.

The 250-mile journey from Naromoru to Homa Bay began at the shores of Lake Victoria on Thursday, February 27.

Accompanied by KSPCA staff, the animals were carefully loaded and transported with all documentation to Atono Primary School in Kasipul Constituency for an overnight rest.

The following morning, the farmers eagerly received their new companions.

Among those facilitating the event was the Homa Bay County Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Charles Oduor, and Ripple Effect Kenya County Director, Mr. Titus Sagala.

Dr. Oduor commended Ripple Effect Kenya for its commitment to restoring the dwindling donkey population, severely impacted by the global donkey skin trade.

He expressed confidence that the farmers would take care of the new donkeys.

Sagala, who also serves as the Chairman of the Alliance for Donkey Welfare Organizations in Kenya (ADWOK), emphasized the need for vigilance against theft and bush slaughter, which continue to threaten Kenya’s donkey population

To guarantee the donkeys’ welfare, Ripple Effect Kenya’s veterinarian, Dr. Ngielo, examined them upon arrival and provided emergency treatment for injuries sustained during transportation.

The Thriving with Donkeys project is committed to sustainable improvements in donkey welfare and community livelihoods.
