One person sustained gunshot injuries after being shot during fuel price protests in Kakamega town on Monday.
Police engaged protesters in running battles within the Kakamega Central Business District, firing live rounds and tear gas to disperse the crowds.
The protesters had lit bonfires and erected barricades along the Kakamega–Malava road, bringing transport to a standstill. Public service vehicles were forced to suspend operations, leaving passengers stranded across the town.
The demonstrators were protesting the high cost of fuel, accusing the government of failing to honour campaign pledges on reducing living costs, particularly for small traders and boda boda operators.
Authorities have since restored partial order in the town, though tensions remained high in some areas.
