Opposition Leaders targeted with graft cases to stifle criticism, Azimio leaders say

Leaders allied with the opposition have criticized President William Ruto for overseeing what they said was a dictatorial regime aimed at muzzling dissenting voices.

Speaking at a church service in Mumias, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka said that the government has displayed a lacklustre attitude in dealing with the fake fertilizer scandal and applied knee-jerk reactions to a broader issue within the Ministry of Agriculture. Laura Otieno has more details.

Speaking at Bumini Catholic Church in Mumias, Wiper chief Kalonzo Musyoka accused the president of applying quick fixes to the fake fertilizer fiasco instead of addressing the wider problem of alleged systemic failure.

Musyoka alleged that the president only broke his silence on the issue following pressure mounted by the opposition.

"We would have been taken to a different approach if there were people who disagree and have not seen a band that has been returned to their drinks or fertilizer to get a return but the crops they were thinking they should also get," said Kalonzo Musyoka, Wiper Party Leader.

The leaders also faulted Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, saying that his notice outlawing the doctors' protests was similar to curtailing the rights under Article 37 of the Constitution of Kenya, which guarantees the right to assembly, demonstration, and picketing.

"We will come in and stand with the doctors if they are harassed by this authoritarian government. Honorable members, when you return to Parliament, tell your colleagues to be ready; if they start tear-gassing our doctors, we are ready to join them in Parliament," stated Eugene Wamalwa, DAP-K Party Leader.

"Bishops of the Catholic Church went to see Ruto and told him the country was going in the wrong direction. These are church leaders meaning there are many challenges," added James Orengo, Siaya Governor.

They were speaking at Bumini Catholic Church in Mumias and Chavakali, respectively.

Meanwhile, former Governor Mwangi Wairia claims he is being targeted for an advertisement the county ran in 2014, which the EACC is investigating for procurement fraud totaling Ksh.140 million.

Wa-Iria, who had to cut short his trip to Mumias on Sunday, was unable to disembark from a helicopter because detectives were waiting nearby.

He stated that due process was followed in the procurement incident currently under investigation.
