One person dead, another injured after UN cargo plane crashes

One person was killed while another sustained serious injuries following a cargo aircraft accident at Elberde town in Somalia.

According to reports, the aircraft model Skyward Fokker 50 Tail (5Y- JWG), which had been contracted by the United Nations' World Food Program (WFP), allegedly overrun the 1000-metre runway and crashed into a building in the town centre.

The aircraft operated by Jetways weighed 7 tonnes at the time of the crash.

Only four people were reportedly onboard and two of them have since been confirmed safe.

The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) has since confirmed the crash saying a probe is underway to establish the cause of the accident.

"The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) wishes to confirm that an aircraft type Fokker 50 (F50) Cargo operated by Jetways, crash-landed on the runway at Ceel Bar& Airport today 18 January 2024 at 11:30 am local time," read a statement from the authority.

"The aircraft had a total of 4 crew on board, there is one death, one serious injury from the accident."
