New road safety project launched to protect school-going children

NTSA Director General George Njao speaks during the launch of the safe-to-school project.
AA Kenya, in collaboration with the Fédération Internationale
de l’Automobile (FIA), has officially launched the Safe-to-School Project at
Kilimani Primary School, a crucial initiative aimed at enhancing road safety
for school-going children through key infrastructural improvements in school
zones.
With road safety remaining a critical concern, particularly in
urban areas, this project is designed to establish best practices that can be
replicated nationwide.
Kilimani Primary School, situated along the busy Argwings
Kodhek Road, was selected as the second beneficiary following the successful
implementation of similar interventions at Kayole One Primary School last year.
The school serves 1,650 students between the ages of 3 and 15.
Working in partnership with the Kenya Urban Roads Authority
(KURA), AA Kenya’s road safety experts -trained in the internationally
recognized Star Rating for Schools (SR4S) methodology - conducted risk
assessments and introduced various safety enhancements.
These include the marking of two zebra crossings, the
establishment of a designated school zone speed limit with clear signage, the
installation of speed bumps, and the construction and demarcation of sidewalks
with protective bollards.
Additionally, road markings were repainted for improved
visibility, road safety training was provided for students and school road
marshals, and reflector jackets along with lollipops were donated to road
safety marshals.
Speaking at the launch, AA Kenya Managing Director, Mr.
Francis Theuri, emphasized the importance of these interventions.
“We are confident that these measures will significantly
reduce road safety risks for the children of Kilimani Primary School,” he said.
“By ensuring that drivers slow down and recognize the school
zone, we are helping to protect young lives and create safer journeys to and
from school. This project is part of our larger commitment to advocating for
safer roads for all, and we look forward to working with more schools across
the country.”
