Ndindi Nyoro assures Kenyans of thorough public consultation on Finance Bill 2024
Kiharu Member of Parliament and Chairman of the Budget Committee Ndindi Nyoro has reassured Kenyans that their views will be thoroughly considered before the implementation of the 2024-2025 Finance Bill.
Speaking in Teso South Constituency of Busia County on Saturday, Nyoro emphasized the government's commitment to public participation in financial matters.
“On the issue of the Finance Bill on tax, we are servants of the people of Kenya. We know there is a financial bill proposal by the National Treasury, but the constitution is also clear that we listen to all Kenyans on matters to do with public finances,” Nyoro stated.
Nyoro underscored the government's dedication to serving the public and ensuring that their opinions shape the legislative process.
“I want to assure Kenyans because we are a government of collective responsibility, I want to assure Kenyans we are your servants, and we will listen to you on matters concerning the Finance Bill," he added.
"What Kenyans want is what we will do because the country is not for us as leaders but for all Kenyans. We will come and tell you what is proposed and we will agree. And what will be agreed upon we will go that way."
Nyoro’s assurances come as part of a broader discussion on the proposed contentious budget for the upcoming financial year, which totals Ksh.3.9 trillion.
The Finance Bill 2024-2025 proposes numerous amendments to existing tax-related laws in Kenya.
These include changes to the Income Tax Act (Chapter 470, Laws of Kenya), the Value Added Tax Act, 2013, the Tax Procedures Act, 2015, the Miscellaneous Fees and Levies Act, 2016, and the Excise Duty Act, 2015.
The bill has elicited public debate, with various stakeholders expressing their concerns and suggestions.
His sentiments were echoed by the area MP Mary Emaase.
