Nandi County students stranded in Finland after county gov't allegedly fails to pay fees
Fifteen Kenyan
students said to have been financially supported by the Nandi County government
to further their studies in Finland are crying for help after their sponsor failed
in paying their fees.
The cohort
says they have been out of class at the Lappeenranta-Lahti University of
Technology LUT, with arrears of around Ksh.13.5 million (£90,000).
Raabia Hussain
told Citizen Digital that since December 1, they have been going through
suffering in the university they had gone to pursue bachelor’s and master’s degree
programs in Nursing and Medicine.
“Unfortunately,
the Nandi government did not pay in accordance with the terms of the
scholarship,” he said.
The students
were reportedly required to pay part of the expenses, including airfare.
“If you will
not meet all the requirements needed to facilitate the students, why commit to
sending them abroad?” Hassain posed.
Hussain added
that they are now in the streets not in classrooms or their homes as a result
of the situation.
