Nairobi: Man dies after beating by caretaker over rent arrears

A family in Nairobi’s South C Estate is pleading for justice after their son was allegedly killed by persons hounding him over rent arrears.

According to reports, the deceased; Eugene Mwangi, died after sustaining severe head injuries at his home on October 4, 2021 following an attack by the establishment’s caretaker and five other individuals.

“The allegations we got is that the caretaker of the flats where he lives came with some goons and wanted to remove him from his house and started throwing his items on the streets,” Francis Mwangi, the deceased’s father, told Citizen TV.

Despite what exactly transpired during the confrontation being a subject of speculation, the family maintains that something sinister must have occurred with multiple eyewitnesses placing the deceased at the scene when the incident transpired.

“Something sinister must have happened since Eugene was spotted trying to make a phone call as he exited the flats. He managed to get to the parking before collapsing,” Patrick Kahoge, a friend to the deceased, said.

Neighbours proceeded to rush the victim to Meridian Hospital but he was pronounced dead on arrival. At the time, the caretaker and his gang of goons were still throwing Mwangi’s belongings into the streets.

“We went back to the house and found them removing the items, when they saw Mzee they ran away and I grabbed one of them,” Lawrence Njoroge, a family friend, narrated.

The matter was reported to Akila and Langata police stations and investigations are currently ongoing.

Confirming the incident, Lang’ata OCS Benjamin Mwanthi confirmed that no suspect had been apprehended in connection with the incident and the file has already been forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to action.
