The Nairobi County
Government has cautioned garbage collection companies against discarding waste
in undesignated areas, warning that entities that do so will have their licenses
revoked immediately.
In a notice dated March
27, Nairobi County Chief Officer for Environment, Geoffrey Mosiria expressed
concern over some garbage collection companies illegally dumping waste in
unauthorized areas, contributing to environmental pollution in and around the
Capital.
“The Constitution of Kenya Article 42 states that: Every citizen has the right to a clean and healthy environment and also the duty to safeguard and enhance its quality,” the notice reads.
Further, he warned that
households or entities responsible for generating waste will also be held accountable
if they engage with a service provider involved in illegal dumping.
“Any service provider
found dumping waste in unauthorized areas will have their license revoked immediately
without their consent,” the notice reads in part.
“The waste generator
(source of waste) will also be held liable for engaging a service provider
involved in illegal dumping and not licensed by the authority.”
Additionally, Mosiria urged the service providers to strictly
adhere to designated disposal sites lest they face legal consequences.
