'My net worth is between Ksh.100M and Ksh.200M,' Okiya Omtatah reveals

Firebrand Busia Senator and 2027 presidential hopeful Okiya Omtatah has declared his net worth to be in the range of Ksh.100 million to Ksh.200 million.

Speaking candidly during an exclusive interview on Citizen TV’s The Explainer show on Tuesday night, the activist-turned-politician attributed his wealth to investments in land and a transport business.

“I own quite a bit of land, which I’ve been buying pieces here and there. I run a transport company, which has got several trucks. I have not calculated my net worth, but I think if I was to be assessed well…including liquidating the pieces of land I have and whatever…I could put myself at between Ksh.100 million to Ksh.200 million as my worth; in terms of assets and stuff like that, and I can account for each of them,” he disclosed.

Omtatah’s declaration comes amid growing public scrutiny of political leaders' financial dealings ahead of the next General Election.

But while many aspirants are expected to throw money at campaigns, the Busia legislator has set himself apart, insisting that money did not win him votes in 2022, and will not be the defining factor in 2027.

“I didn’t have money (when running for Busia Senator in 2022), I just had a mic, and I told people what I wanted to do and they gave me their votes,” he recalled.

“If you go across Busia, you’ll hardly get people who received money from me, but I got the highest vote as an individual. So, people can understand and give you votes, if you really make them understand what the challenges are and what you’re able to do.”

Omtatah, known for his relentless court battles, delivered a sharp jab at money-driven politics, declaring that agenda and policies do not actually need deep pockets to sell to the people.

“When we go out, hatutaenda kuuza sura, tutaenda kuuza sera. Sura ndio inahitaji pesa kuuza, lakini sera haihitaji pesa kusukuma,” he stated.
