MPs fire at Uhuru over Jubilee party involvement, ask him to retire from politics
This is amid contention over the party's leadership as East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega and former Ndaragwa MP Jeremiah Kioni have engaged in endless clashes to take the reigns.
Uhuru, the party leader, has since called for a National Delegates Conference (NDC) slated for Monday with MP Kega's faction arguing that the ex-president has no mandate to call for any meeting since he has lost reigns over the party.
Speaking during an inter-denominational prayer meeting in Isiolo Boys Secondary School grounds on Sunday, the team led by Kega clarified that there will be no (NDC) meeting and any assembly held on Monday will be nothing but a political gathering.
"I want to announce as the Secretary General of Jubilee, there is no NDC meeting tomorrow. We will call the meeting at the right time," said Kega.
His sentiments were echoed by nominated MP Sabina Chege who added that Uhuru should steer clear from any political affairs and instead focus on his retirement.
Chege posited that Uhuru should instead give advise to other leaders who are actively in leadership positions including those allied to his "former party".
"I urge the former president to rest because he is old now. He should come and advise us but we will be very shocked to see him going to the streets to join the protests. He should not be deceived by that mzee (Raila) again," she said.
"There is no meeting tomorrow and that position lapsed 6 months ago and we are in the 8th month. We will call a legitimate meeting from the head office."
Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro also lashed at the former president urging him to honor the position he holds as a retired leader and also make peace with President William Ruto.
"Our presidential retirement benefit act is very clear that when a president retires they should sieze to hold any position in a political party. We are now 8 months since the elections," he said.
"I urge you as a young man please help us to continue to respect the retired president's seat. I am not qualified to advise you but call the president to congratulate him and resign from political parties."
Kioni's reported refusal to step down as party Secretary-General to make way for Kega is what is said to have sparked the party's clash.
The Jubilee Party's National Executive Council made changes on February 9th, replacing Kioni with Kega. The Registrar of Political Parties approved the changes, but the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal overturned them.
Kioni, along with the party's Vice Chairperson David Murathe and National Treasurer Kagwe Gichohi, had been suspended for their conduct of the political outfit's affairs.
At the NEC meeting, the party decided that MP Kega would replace Kioni, MP Keynan would replace Murathe, and Raychel Nyamai would serve as National Treasurer in an acting capacity.
Kioni, on the other hand, has claimed that the meeting was held without the members following the rules of the law, thereby calling for his suspension to be lifted.
