Monica Kimani’s family speaks as Maribe, Jowie set to know their fate today

The High Court is set to deliver judgment on Friday, February 9, in the case where Joseph Irungu alias Jowie and former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe are charged with the murder of Monica.

George Kimani, the brother to the businesswoman has decried delayed judgement and hopes that the long-awaited justice will finally put the family’s hearts to rest. 

“It has really taken long, we have been going to court for over five years, we knew the matter would come to an end last year so that we can all move on. We have tough days, especially our parents but we just cope,” he told Citizen Digital. 

The judgement that had been scheduled for March 15, 2024, will now be delivered tomorrow following consent by parties. 

“Justice is the only thing that we want, it will bring closure to the family. The past years have not been easy on us, especially our mother she is the most affected. We try and protect her from the noise and hurtful things said about my sister but I believe all this will come to an end once we get justice,” he said.

The judgment was initially set to be issued on October 6, 2023, but was deferred after Lady Justice Grace Nzioka was reported to be ill.

A new date of December 15, 2023 was set but delivery of the verdict was once again put off to January 26, 2024.

It was then postponed after one accused person, Maribe, was reported ill on January 26. 

In the interview with Citizen Digital, George described his late sister as a kind, hardworking woman who loved to give and share. He further described her as a selfless woman.

“She was our firstborn and the driver behind the family business in South Sudan where she was the managing director of our company. She was my boss, a good friend and hardworking. It was painful losing her in that cruel manner,” he told Citizen Digital.

“Those who knew my sister at a personal level know that she was a giver, nurtured and brought out the best in people.  I learnt a lot through her she ushered us into her company and help us. She was a loving sister, she played a very big role in our milestones as a family. There are things that she bought us that we can never forget,” he added.

George Kimani testified in court of the pain the family endured after losing Monica, who managed their business affairs.

“Her biggest undoing was thinking everyone was her friend, because of her huge heart she welcomed everyone and did not know how to differentiate friends and foes,” he said.

George says that although the family has recovered some of her belongings, they are yet to receive Monica’s Ksh. 4 million house in Kiambu almost six years later.

“We are yet to recover the house we got almost everything else, whatever is remaining is with the prosecution team, I believe the case has to end for us to collect them,” he said.

Monica, 28-years-old then, was murdered in her Lamuria Garden apartment in the Kilimani area, on September 19, 2018. 

Maribe and Jowie would later be charged with the murder on October 15, 2018.
