Governor Nassir says Raila's 2027 presidential candidature ‘not negotiable’
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir
has endorsed Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Raila Odinga for the
2027 presidency.
Speaking
on Thursday at Ukunda during the ongoing ODM party membership recruitment
exercise, Nassir demanded that the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition coalition
party chief run for president for the sixth time, saying it was not an issue up
for debate.
The
first-time Governor argued that Mr. Odinga has been tried and tested
politically, hence is the most suitable candidate to turn around the lives of
Kenyans and succeed President William Ruto.
“I
have seen the news headlines ‘Raila hints at the presidency for 2027’…I know
you have not made me the ODM spokesperson or your spokesperson, I speak for the
people of Mombasa, the Coast and Kenyans,” he said.
“We
are not asking, we are not requesting or pleading, we the people of Kenya are
commanding you to vie for presidency for 2027. You must be on the ballot in
2027.”
Governor
Nassir went on to commend the former premier for patriotism in his political
career reiterating that he is the timely candidate to unseat Ruto and turn around
the fortunes of country.
“We
have not seen anyone who has been able to put aside his own ambitions and put
forward the needs of Kenyans. If there is someone who should be prayed for, it
is Odinga,” he stated.
The
remarks by the Governor follow purported uncertainty in the coalition regarding
the opposition coalition Azimio’s flagbearer in the next elections.
Azimio
co-principal and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has been pushing for his own
candidacy with the hope of garnering support from his
co-principals, including Mr. Odinga.
“If
I was ready in 2002, 2013 why do you think I will not be ready in 2027? The
right time has come for this country to recognize a leader they have always
rejected. I have played the team…I have selflessly supported others. If the
country is ready for it, I will go for it,” he previously said in an interview
with NTV.
“Giving
up my presidential ambitions will actually mean I go home. We are at the
tail-end of a process which should deliver this country. Azimio will give Ruto
a strong candidate this time round.”
Mr. Odinga
has however remained mum on the 2027 race, maintaining that
there is no purported division in the coalition and that the
leaders will eventually rally behind one candidate.
